ROOF+TIMBER International 2010

Closing Report for ROOF+TIMBER International 2010 in Cologne

A confident display by the Rhine

· ROOF+TIMBER International plots the course for the sector in renovation and modernisation
· Top marks for the fair´s concept and range of exhibits
· International participation grows

It was smiles all round in Cologne on the banks of the Rhine - because over 42,000 trade visitors streamed through the doors at ROOF+TIMBER International in this city between 24 and 27 February 2010. These roofers, carpenters, plumbers, architects and engineers were all keen to find out about new products, ideas and solutions for timber construction, fittings, roofs and walls, on show at the stands of the 471 exhibitors. Great interest was shown, too, at this four-day event, in the new highlights in the accompanying programme - whether it was the Architects Forum, the get-together for carpenters, with over 500 participants in front of Cologne Cathedral, and the presentation of the German roofing prize, awarded by the German roofing association, to Otto Kenzler.

In 2010 ROOF+TIMBER International has made a great leap forward in terms of internationality. Because this year the proportion of visitors from abroad doubled to 13 percent (2008: 7 percent). This delighted the two organisations that support ROOF+TIMBER International - the Zentralverband des Deutschen Dachdeckerhandwerks and Holzbau Deutschland - Bund Deutscher Zimmermeister confederated in the Zentralverband des Deutschen Baugewerbes. Ullrich Huth, Chairman of Holzbau Deutschland was highly satisfied with the fair: "We had very positive feedback from our firms. There was good attendance at the stands and demand was high. The themes of renovation and improving energy efficiency were particularly popular. We have seen that the timing of the fair was just right - it means the tradesmen can start the new season with plenty of new impressions, ideas and new products." According to a survey by an independent pollster, 91.1 percent of the trade visitors rated the range on display as "good” to “very good". The main reason visitors gave for coming to the fair was to search for innovations and new products. 81.9 percent of those surveyed were able to achieve this goal during their visit to this cathedral city.

On the exhibitor side, too, the response to the four days of the fair was very positive. 85.4 percent of the exhibiting firms rated the professional quality of the visitors as "good to very good". Karl-Heinz-Schneider, President of the Zentralverband des Deutschen Dachdeckerhandwerks, sees several reasons for this positive mood among visitors and exhibitors: "The concept behind our fair is very well received. The location of Cologne has proved to be excellent for this leading world fair. And the focus on renovation and modernisation, in particular as regards energy efficiency, was a good choice. Now, together with our partners, we will be working on further developing this concept, ahead of the event in Stuttgart in 2012." That´s the location for the next ROOF+TIMBER International, which takes place from 31 January to 3 February 2012.

Dieter Dohr, CEO and President of GHM, Gesellschaft für Handwerksmessen mbH, was pleasantly surprised at the high level of interest in the Architects Forum which took place on the Thursday of the fair (25.2.2010): "Over 500 people turned up to this event - a number that far exceeded our expectations. Clearly the fact that this forum excited such interest shows how important cooperation and professional exchange is between roofing and carpentry specialists and architects in day-to-day building work. In order to achieve maximum efficiency, all those engaged in building construction will, in future, too, have to work even more closely together. The Architects Forum gave important pointers in this direction."

The Architects Forum, which was free of charge to participants, was just one of the high points of the informative accompanying programme. In addition to the information at the stands, trade visitors were able to take part in four days of lectures and discussions. Lots of useful information could be gathered here, for example at the German Roofers Day, the German Timber Construction Day, and in a special presentation on green roofs.

What the exhibitors said about ROOF+TIMBER International 2010:

"We are very satisfied with the way the fair went. We had excellent visitor frequency at our stand and the quality of the visitors was outstanding."
(Bernard Gualdi, Head of Communication at Braas Monier GmbH)

"Once again, our expectations were more than met in Cologne, just as they were two years ago in Stuttgart. We had a good response from roofers and carpenters to the roof systems and wall constructions for energy saving and energy acquisition. In particular the innovative photovoltaic solutions from Eternit are in high demand. We managed to position the Eternit brand at ROOF+TIMBER International as a strong, future-oriented partner."
(Jan R. Krause, Head of Marketing and Communication at Eternit AG)

"The experience we had at ROOF+TIMBER International this year was very positive. For us it is a very important fair, and one where we always enjoy putting on a presentation. We welcomed lots of visitors to our stand, and were able to reach different target groups - building materials suppliers, architects, processors. We will definitely be coming back."
(Anja Zeiske, PR and Communication Spokeswoman at Fermacell GmbH)

"The concept behind the joint stand of Böcker, MAGOG and Flender was a resounding success at this year´s DACH + HOLZ International in Cologne. The mutual synergies from the individual groups of visitors confirmed this impression. The enormously high proportion of national and international guests meant that this was one of the most successful trade-fair presentations by roofing professionals from Westphalia."
(Karl-Heinz Schneider, Managing Director, Wilhelm Flender GmbH & Co. KG)

"The exhibition location of Cologne showed its quality also at this year´s ROOF+TIMBER International. The fair, held for the first time in Cologne, worked extremely well for both the target groups of roofers and carpenters. Mafell AG looks forward to being a guest here again in four years´ time."
(Ralf Kohler, Marketing and Sales Director at Mafell AG)

"A very successful fair, high-quality contacts, good organisation. We will probably take part again; the section on photovoltaics could be expanded."
(Carolin Högele, Marketing Manager at Mage Solar GmbH)

"Right across the board there was a very good mood, among exhibitors and the trade audience. Little could be felt of the economic crisis. The fair was a positive, forward-looking event: innovative presentations at the stands and a focus on energy-saving themes! The fair is a good gathering point for our Germany-wide ZEDACH Group."
(Henning Höpken, Head of Advertising and Joint Marketing at ZEDACH eG)

"The fair met all our expectations in full. We had a tremendous number of visitors at our stand and we were able to engage in many top-quality discussions. We were particularly pleased with the many contacts with international visitors. This location, which draws visitors from a wide area, is perfect for us."
(Frank Rummel, Managing Director at Rathschenk Schiefer- und Dach-Systeme)
