XWORKS CLT enables fast, eco-friendly densification: two homes rise in Vechta in just three weeks.

XWORKS CLT makes urban densification fast and sustainable by adding housing to existing sites. In Vechta, two eco-friendly multi-family homes were completed in just three weeks, demonstrating efficient, low-impact timber construction amid housing shortages.

Urban densification is becoming increasingly important for creating new housing without sealing additional land. Instead, already developed sites are used to expand living space and make better use of existing structures. A current example can be found in the city center of Vechta, where XWORKS is constructing two high-quality, ecological multi-family buildings in just three weeks—an impressive demonstration of the potential of modern timber construction.

One of the most suitable technologies for such projects is cross-laminated timber (CLT). Thanks to its low weight and high load-bearing capacity, it is ideal for rooftop additions, extensions, or complete new buildings in dense urban environments. Its high degree of prefabrication enables extremely short construction times—as demonstrated in Vechta—while minimizing noise and dust emissions.

This form of densification aims to counter urban sprawl and make optimal use of existing infrastructure, from transport networks to social amenities. This is especially relevant given the housing shortages in many German cities, where additional living space is urgently needed but new building land is scarce.

At the same time, CLT construction delivers strong ecological benefits: wood stores CO₂, is renewable, and enables climate-friendly building with a significantly reduced environmental footprint. Large-format elements allow for flexible floor plans and high-quality architectural design.

Overall, densification with CLT offers a sustainable, fast, and resource-efficient solution to growing urban housing needs and represents a future-oriented approach to making cities more compact, livable, and climate-friendly.
