A “cool” roof not only saves energy

Hot summers are becoming more frequent. VAEPLAN's ultra-reflective membranes offer the perfect solution. Not only do they reduce heat penetration into the building, they can also increase the performance of your PV system.

In June 2020, construction of the new secondary school in Pesaro, located on Via Lamarmora, was completed. This remarkable building has been declared the most sustainable school in Europe and has received the prestigious LEED Platinum certification, one of the most stringent sustainability standards.

VAEPLAN products played a crucial role in waterproofing the 1,400 square metre roof of this environmentally friendly school, with approximately 800 square metres of green roofing. The selected VAEPLAN V-FR in white is known for its impressive Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) of 101, its BROOF-(t3) fire classification, and its special Type III environmental label.

PV modules lose performance at high temperatures (approximately 0.3% to 0.5% per degree Celsius above 25°C). A cooler roof under the modules results in less heating of the PV modules themselves. Especially with bifacial (double-sided) modules, a high SRI value of the substrate increases the reflected radiation absorbed by the back of the module, which can significantly increase yield.

In addition, the roof was equipped with VAEFIX profiles to securely fasten the solar panels without penetrating the membrane.

“The main objective of this project was to preserve the natural balance of the environment in which the building is integrated. In addition, great importance was attached to extremely low energy consumption. Thanks to the collaboration with companies such as VAEPLAN, which are always committed to sustainability and environmentally conscious solutions, both objectives were successfully achieved,” said architect Margherita Finamore.
