The vertical solar system for green roofs

The award-winning SOLYCO SOLon green roof system for the true symbiosis of green roofs and solar power generation. All the advantages of a green roof are retained without restriction. SOLon was awarded the Top Innovation Award 2024 by pv magazine.

The system

The solar system SOLon has been developed primarily for green roofs. The special feature of SOLon is the vertical elevation of the solar modules. In contrast to conventional combinations, the roof is evenly rained on and illuminated by the sun. In addition, the system achieves a comparable specific energy yield. Therefore, the ecological benefits of the green roof can be fully reaped and electrical energy can still be generated.

Modules

Transparent double glass modules with special dimensions (2011 mm x 415 mm) are used. Two rows of cells can be accommodated and are connected in parallel with each other. This greatly reduces the losses caused by self-shading. The high bifacial coefficient of over 80 % of the used TOPCon cell technology is fully utilized by the vertical installation. Energy is generated from both sides of the module.

Mounting system

The substructure consists of robust aluminum profiles. Depending on the design, the vertical module profiles are 600 mm or 750 mm high and are connected by 760 mm long cross bracing. This results in a total system height of 650 mm (variant 1) or 800 mm (variant 2). The connection is stable and secure thanks to connecting brackets and M6 cap screws with safety nuts.

This arrangement can be continued as desired to form a row of module profiles. Between two such rows, the solar modules can be inserted vertically into the corresponding grooves of the module profiles and rest on special module supports.

The module profiles are finished with a keystone. This secures the module in the groove of the profile. A wind tunnel test has shown that there is no lift effect on the vertically mounted modules. As a result, the system requires significantly less ballast than conventional systems. Wind loads occur mainly on the first and last rows of modules and only have a shifting effect. For safety reasons, these rows are equipped with mounting feet.

Performance

The vertical mounting results in a special yield curve. With an East-West orientation, two power peaks occur in the morning and afternoon, while a yield dip occurs at midday when the sun is directly overhead.

A line graph shows power in watts on the y-axis and time from 5:30 to 20:30 on the x-axis, with two peaks around midday and late afternoon. Caption: Yield curve over the course of the day.
