Cross-Laminated Timber: We lock the crack in! Exclusive surfaces in premium wood species.

The exclusive visible surfaces from the FHS cross-laminated timber (CLT) production impress with their virtually crack-free finish in high-quality wood species. Ceilings or walls in Silver Fir, Spruce, Larch, Stone Pine, Oak, American Walnut, or Canadian Maple give any room a sense of warmth and elegance.

Over 25 years of experience and perfect craftsmanship

FHS owes its high level of expertise in wood processing – and its exceptional technical equipment for stairs and CLT – to more than 25 years of specialization in stair manufacturing. At its production site in Veselí in the Czech Republic, FHS manufactures staircases in wood, steel, stainless steel and glass, ranging from simple standard staircases to large custom projects based on specific customer and architect requirements.

The CLT production benefits directly from the exceptional skills of the workforce and from the extensive inventory of high-grade wood species. For more than five years, the complete CLT manufacturing process has taken place in-house, from sawing to CNC processing. This provides maximum flexibility! For customers without their own planning division, FHS can also take on detailed workshop planning. As an EN-1090 certified steel manufacturer, FHS can also produce and supply load-bearing steel components where needed.

Cross-layer and exclusive top layer: Ensuring a crack-free premium CLT surface!

For the premium visible surface, a 3 mm blind veneer layer made of spruce is first applied perpendicular to the grain direction of the top lamella. A 3 mm exclusive top veneer is then applied parallel to the top lamella. This prevents swelling and shrinkage of the wood from causing cracks in the visible surface. The crack stays locked inside! All veneer layers are also edge-bonded. The panel bonding uses only formaldehyde-free PU adhesive. As a result, the VOC emissions of FHS CLT behave like untreated natural wood.

FHS can also manufacture continuous CLT ceiling elements with different surface finishes for different rooms.

Innovation Award for CLT ceilings with integrated heating / cooling

At BAU 2025 in Munich, FHS received an award in the Architecture and Building category for its CLT ceilings with integrated water-based heating and cooling. Directly underneath the blind veneer and premium surface layer, FHS can install pipework in a non-structural 20 mm layer. These pipes can be used either as heating – like underfloor heating – or for cooling the room. Using the same system, cable ducts and recesses (e.g. for recessed lighting) can also be integrated into the premium CLT ceiling.

Comfortable indoor climate through surface-near thermal activation

In well-insulated buildings, water-based ceiling heating in CLT elements is an ideal way to create a particularly comfortable indoor climate via thermal mass activation and large-area radiant heat. With its high specific heat capacity, the solid timber ceiling acts as a perfect buffer medium that distributes and stores heat (or cooling) across the entire surface. The same effect applies to ceiling cooling.

The tightly embedded heating pipes sit directly below the total 6 mm (2 × 3 mm) cross-veneered layers. This surface-near thermal activation allows fast response times for both heating and cooling, even with minimal adjustment in feed temperature.

Even in winter, feed temperature can remain low thanks to the large radiant surface, enabling very small system temperature differences and greater comfort compared to spot heating sources. In summer, the precooled ceiling absorbs heat, often eliminating the need for energy-intensive air conditioning.

Prefabricated CLT stair modules: Wood instead of concrete!

The prefabricated staircase made of cross-laminated timber is now also available with pre-assembled steel stringers and railings. Quickly lifted into place by crane, the CLT staircase is immediately walkable as a construction stair, and when delivered with railing, includes fall protection. Multiple floors can be stacked accurately on top of each other. The stair module can even include prefabricated walls for the stairwell.

For finishing with stair treads (or railings in wood, stainless steel, or glass) from FHS, no further measurement on site is required because CAD data is already available from production. Site-installed coverings such as tiles or stone can also be applied. The CLT staircase is suitable for both new construction and renovations. Fire and acoustic performance requirements can be met according to building specifications.
