DACH+HOLZ International 2022: the summer edition exceeded all expectations

A sense of joy reigned at the four-day-long DACH+HOLZ International 2022 in Cologne, which finally brought industry professionals together again. The leading trade fair for the roofing and timber industry was characterised by smiling faces, visitors who were keen to make investments, and engaging, in-depth conversations.

The summer edition of DACH+HOLZ International 2022 was an example of networking at its best. Both exhibitors and visitors were of the unanimous opinion that the discussions they had were high-quality and more in-depth. Networking with industry professionals, meeting up with existing acquaintances and making new contacts were the main goals of around 20,000 visitors from over 50 different countries who came together in Cologne after so many months of pandemic. Between 5 and 8 July, 342 companies from 20 different countries provided trade professionals with detailed information about their products at the leading fair for the roofing and timber construction sector.

Construction sector willing to invest

“Of course, there were several well-known firms missing from the summer edition of DACH+HOLZ International 2022. However, the exhibitors that were there had the perfect showcase for their products and benefited from increased interest. They were positively impressed by the business they were able to generate over the past four days,” says Klaus Plaschka, Managing Director of GHM. Based on responses to a survey, trade visitors were more willing to invest at this fair than during the 2020 event in Stuttgart. The need for market proximity, information and networking were even higher on the list of visitors’ priorities this time. “We are delighted that we managed to meet these expectations. The unique opportunity for companies to showcase themselves like this in July was tremendously important and came at the right time – despite all the current challenges,” explains Plaschka.

Exhibitors also confirm that DACH+HOLZ International is a key marketplace for the sector: “The success of the fair was sensational for us in terms of business. Our stand was 50% bigger than the one we had at previous events. We saw this as an opportunity and we certainly used it to our full advantage. We enjoyed high-calibre conversations and are more than satisfied,” sums up Ulrich Lutter, CEO of Lemp GmbH & Co. KG.

Visitors were eager for information

The two sponsors of DACH+HOLZ – the ZVDH (central association of German roofers) and Holzbau Deutschland (association of German carpenters) – also confirm the outstanding success and in-depth networking of this edition. “I had some of the most interesting conversations that I have ever had at a trade fair. It was an unbelievable summer edition,” confirms Dirk Bollwerk, President of the ZVDH. “Although DACH+HOLZ was smaller than previous events, it still had enormous benefits to offer. I would like to thank everyone who was there and who made the July edition possible.”

This opinion is shared by Peter Aicher, Chair of Holzbau Deutschland. “Nothing can replace face-to-face meetings – and this was confirmed categorically by DACH+HOLZ International 2022. In-depth networking was the order of the day at this year’s trade get-together in Cologne, which serves as the key platform for sharing the latest industry knowledge and developments.”

Passau-based Haidl GmbH scoops up the Start-up Award

Start-ups in the sector were also able to use the summer edition of DACH+HOLZ as a springboard, with participating newcomers attracting considerable interest in the dedicated start-up section.  Furthermore, they also had the opportunity to take to the forum stage, winning the audience round to their product with short pitches. It was Haidl GmbH that ended up scoring the most points with the expert jury and scooped up the Start-up Award. The Passau-based father-and-son enterprise has developed an innovative, revolutionary drainpipe, which is not only more sustainable than what’s currently on the market, but also easier to install. “It’s a clean, high-quality solution for a problematic area on construction sites,” explains the jury.

“DACH+HOLZ was the first opportunity that we’ve had to present our product to so many people, especially to professionals from this sector. We finally got to meet our target market in person. It was the best platform imaginable,” says Johannes Haidl, CEO of Haidl GmbH.

Influencers took a break from their smartphones

The fact that nothing can replace face-to-face meetings in this digital era was also confirmed by the sector’s young, social media-oriented generation. As a new initiative, DACH+HOLZ International invited influencers to convene and network on the Tuesday. A ‘meet & greet’ event and social media sessions gave these influencers the chance to share their experience with a professional audience, including how best to attract the next generation. Meeting influencers in person and putting faces to names led to great excitement: “I’ve met so many new people today and experienced so much – I can hardly put it into words. This was the first trade fair I’ve been to and I’m so grateful to have been here,” reports Sina Klein, aka dachdeckerin_sina on Instagram (24.3K followers) following her visit to the fair.

Rising stars in the spotlight

DACH+HOLZ International is also reputed within the industry as a platform for the next generation. The Timber Construction European Championships, which were hosted in Hall 7 during the trade fair, provided much excitement. The competition saw 17 carpenters from seven nations taking part. “This was another opportunity for us to underline the appeal and diversity of carpentry as a career,” said Peter Aicher, Chair of Holzbau Deutschland. The German team from Holzbau Deutschland successfully demonstrated their skills again in the team competition and managed to secure first place. Second place went to the French carpentry team, represented by Adrien Chenu, Charles Navelot and Colin Laîné, while the Swiss team – Matthias Gerber, Elias Gogniat and Nathan Schmid – were ranked third. In the individual competition, Marcel Bolego from South Tyrol was named Best European Carpenter 2022.

Eager anticipation of the next DACH+HOLZ in March 2024

It will be Stuttgart’s turn to host the next DACH+HOLZ International, which will take place from 5 to 8 March 2024. Many industry players have already indicated their intention to exhibit. A large number of visitors have also saved the date in their diaries. In a survey, 68 percent of respondents confirmed their plans to attend the Stuttgart edition of this leading trade fair.
